Soccer Star Maradona’s Earrings on Auction!
January 4, 2010 – 7:32 pmItalian authorities are just about ready to auction a pair of diamond studded gold earrings worn by Maradona as they continue to chase the retired football icon’s enormous tax debt. Maradona was on a visit to see a specialist at a weight loss clinic in Italy in Sept 2009 and had his jewelry held for tax evasion.
Unfortunately the diamond studded earrings are only worth about $10,000 and unlikely to make a big dent in the $50 million tax bill still owed. This tax bill had also accrued close to $30 million in interest.
However, most people believe that the Italian authorities are doing the right thing and giving no free ride to Maradona who played at Napoli from 1986-91. During the 5 years, Maradona never paid tax and owes close to $60 million in total. In 2006, authorities did seize two expensive watches worn by the Argentinean soccer star while he was visiting Napoli but again the total worth was only about $20,000.
The auction for Maradona’s earrings is slated for Jan 14 and will come with a copy of the police rap sheet and Maradona’s signature on it.
Maradona is currently under suspension and fined by FIFIA because of his loud boisterous rant at journalists following one of Argentina’s soccer game for the World Cup finals in South Africa.
