Inverted nipples and Cosmetic Surgery?

December 31, 2009 – 2:03 pm

Inverted nipples are common in women. Estimates indicate that at least 20-25 percent of women have one or both nipples which are inverted or flat.  What women should understand is that this is completely normal. Plastic surgeons tend to say that this is abnormal because they want to make money from doing unnecessary surgery.

The only problem with inverted nipples is difficulty with breast feeding. The infant may have a difficult time grasping on to the nipple, but asides from this functional problem, inverted nipples pose no health risk.

In fact many men also have flat or inverted nipples and life goes on as normal.

Sometimes the nipples may feel flat and one can check by pinching the outer areola and the nipple will pop out.

There are a variety of gimmicks and bras designed to treat inverted nipples but in fact none is needed. There are some bras with a small plastic disc with a hole in it but these fancy bras are waste of money and do not work.

If you have inverted nipples do not worry, one in every four women has the same problem and so do some men.

As to whether you need surgery to correct it? The only reason to have surgery is for comesis, there is no other benefit. Mind you the results of surgery are not perfect; the surgery is expensive and painful.

If a plastic surgeon ever gives you a long seminar on inverted nipples and its physiological importance, he/she is trying to get you to have unnecessary surgery. So save yourself some money, read about the disorder and accept what you have. There is absolutely nothing wrong with inverted nipples.
